Why Autumn Might Be the Best Season for Dating

7 October 2026 · 7 min read

A candlelit autumn dinner table with red wine, falling leaves and warm lanterns

Cosy cafés, candlelit dinners, gorgeous clothes and a perfectly legitimate excuse to sit a little closer… maybe Autumn has been dating season all along.

I love Autumn.

I'll confess I'm not entirely impartial. My birthday falls in Autumn, so darker evenings, cooler days and the first real excuse to wear a fabulous coat make me happier than they probably should.

But I'm starting to think Autumn might be the most romantic time of year.

Summer gets all the attention. Rooftop drinks. Sunny beer gardens. Romantic weekends away. Long evenings outside.

Lovely.

But Autumn gives us atmosphere.

And when it comes to dating, atmosphere can do an awful lot of the work for you.

Autumn dates are naturally more romantic

There is something about a dark evening and a beautifully lit restaurant that immediately makes dinner feel more intimate.

Add candles, good food, a bottle of wine and someone you really fancy sitting opposite you and suddenly Tuesday night has way more potential.

Even the simpler autumn date ideas become romantic.

A long walk followed by hot chocolate somewhere warm. Sunday lunch in a country pub. Wandering around the shops together. A cinema or theatre date when it's pouring outside.

You don't need elaborate plans.

Autumn has already provided the mood lighting.

There's no shortage of reasons to huddle in close.

The best thing about Autumn is… it's cold

Which means putting your arm through somebody else's while you're walking is no longer flirting. It's temperature management.

Obviously.

Then there's Halloween.

Scary films. Haunted houses. Ghost walks. Horror mazes.

I'm not suggesting anyone would deliberately exaggerate how frightened they are because it provides an excellent excuse to grab the person next to them.

That would be terribly manipulative.

Moving swiftly on…

Staying in suddenly becomes a proper date

During summer, staying indoors can feel vaguely criminal.

In Autumn, it's encouraged.

And some of the loveliest date ideas don't involve going anywhere at all.

Cook dinner together. Open some wine. Light the candles. Choose a film. Order far too much takeaway. Bake something. Put some music on. Spend three hours talking on the sofa.

Or just snuggle up together and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

It's also nice dating at a time of year when life slows down a little.

You have more opportunities to talk.

And, of course, more opportunities to keep each other warm.

Autumn date outfits are better too!

I will happily debate this one.

Summer dresses are gorgeous, but Autumn date outfits have sophistication.

Think fitted jumper dresses with knee-high boots. Pencil skirts with beautiful tops. Tailored trousers and soft knits. Fabulous overcoats. Leather boots. Gorgeous handbags.

Then come the accessories.

Belts. Scarves. Hats. Gold jewellery. Gloves.

Autumn lets you look feminine and sexy without showing very much – and personally, I think there's something alluring about that.

Sometimes a little mystery is more interesting.

Autumn beauty deserves its own love affair

And now onto makeup.

Warm browns. Earthy eyeshadows. Bronzed skin. Soft beige and caramel tones. Berry, nude and warm-toned lipsticks.

Even fragrances become warmer, richer and slightly sexier.

Basically, Autumn gives you an entirely new beauty personality to play with before a date.

And yes, as far as I'm concerned, that's reason enough to look forward to one.

It turns out Autumn might just be made for dating

Of course, the season can't perform miracles.

If he spends dinner talking exclusively about himself, Autumn leaves won't save him.

But if you're dating someone you enjoy spending time with – or you're about to meet somebody new – this time of year gives you so many brilliant ways to do it.

Summer might bring the butterflies, but Autumn brings the warmth. ❤️

Enjoyed this one? There's plenty more where that came from… ❤️
